FACT OR FICTION
If you have a general interest in all things historical this could be the group for you. We take a broad approach rather than focus on specifics such as local or family history, and the emphasis is on accessibility and inclusivity – exploring how events of the distant and more recent past can be relevant to our lives today
The History Group is currently taking a summer break, but this offers an opportunity to start researching for our upcoming new series – Fact or Fiction. Each month I will issue a statement, and in our meetings we will discuss whether we think this is fact, fiction, or … we simply don’t know. The focus each month will be on a person or event that has typically attracted a great deal of attention, be that from academic historians, in popular media (websites, documentaries, podcasts etc), or often dramas, novels and so on.

We are going to start with a trilogy (September to November) – Mary Queen of Scots, her son, James I and VI, and the Gunpowder Plot. At our meeting on Monday, 14th September*, 2.00pm at the Len Evans Hall, Aberkenfig, we will discussing the following statement relating to Mary, Queen of Scots:
“Mary, Queen of Scots was the author of her own downfall”
There are many academic texts available, including books by David Starkey and Ronald Hutton on the Tudor and Stuart dynasties, and you will undoubtedly find much information online or in History magazines. There is also an excellent ‘The Rest is History’ podcast series on Mary Queen of Scots which is available via the BBC Sounds, Amazon Music or Spotify Apps on mobile devices, laptops, Smart TV’s etc. The 2018 film ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ is still available on some subscription TV services, and there may be documentaries available too.
