The next prompt for Tuesday, 18th August is to write a story, poem or memoir, 'A Chinese Whisper.' Of course, if you don't fancy doing this, you are quite welcome to share a story or poem you've already written and would like to share.
Writings can be in any format, any genre - short story, poetry, prose or short story up to 1,200 words maximum or 36 lines for a poem.
One of the pleasures of writing is discovering where a simple idea can lead. In June (2026) The Oldie magazine challenged readers to write a sonnet entitled Forty Winks. Rather than writing about an afternoon nap, Claudette imagined our own local seascape as the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley might have viewed them—a brief escape from the pressures of modern life and was thrilled when the poem won Claudette a prize of £25 and publication in the Oldies magazine, August issue number 468.
This follows her success in 2025, winning the first ever u3a Essay Competition. Her essay, The Spark Behind the Sizzle. Claudette chose to explore the impact of Albert Marsh's invention of nichrome, which powers modern technology including the toaster and the hairdryer. Her prize, a £100 Lifestyle shopping voucher donated by the creators of Friends Extra, a certificate and a book ‘The Long History of the Future.’ Claudette, is also leader of Porthcawl u3a Group II Writers.
